Father McBride's Teen Catechism

Book cover: 'Father McBride's Teen Catechism: Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church'
Author(s):
Alfred McBride, O.Praem.

Teen Catechism is a nice entry point into the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In spite of its name, Teen Catechism could be used by an adult convert or any person who wants a solid introduction to or review of our Catholic faith. It follows the topic sequence of the Catechism, covering the Creed, the Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer in its 36 chapters.

Daddy's Lullaby

Book cover: 'Daddy's Lullaby'
Author(s):
Tony Bradman
Illustrator(s):
Jason Cockcroft
Daddy's Lullaby by Tony Bradman, beautifully illustrated by Jason Cockcroft, is a children's storybook about a young dad who comes home late at night to find the baby wide awake in his crib. In his efforts to soothe the baby back to sleep, dad cuddles him in his arms and tours the house with the baby to see all the other sleeping members of the family.

Happy Birth Day!

Book cover: 'Happy Birth Day!'
Author(s):
Robie H. Harris
Illustrator(s):
Michael Emberley
This is a simple story of a mother describing her baby's first day after birth. It focuses on how the baby looks and acts and how much the baby is loved by the parents and extended family. The best part, I think, are the illustrations. The illustrator has wonderfully captured the lovable yet wrinkly face of a newborn and the beautiful excitement and exhaustion of bringing a new life into the world. It is a wonderful book for toddlers and other young children to read while anticipating the arrival of a new sibling.

Cat. Chat: The Catholic Audio Show for Kids Vol. 1

Book cover: 'Cat. Chat: The Catholic Audio Show for Kids Vol. 1'
Author(s):
Gerald & Denise Montpetit

"Cat. Chat." "Cat. Chat." That is all my children have been singing for the last two days, since they received the two Cat. Chat CDs (short for Catholic chats about God). These CD's combine "faith-filled" stories, lively (contemporary Catholic/Christian) songs and heartfelt prayer, all within the context of family life. These kid-appealing CD's also include the family cat, Moses, who introduces the family, makes comments, and closes each session.

Cat. Chat: The Catholic Audio Show For Kids Vol. 2

Book cover: 'Cat. Chat: The Catholic Audio Show For Kids Vol. 2'
Author(s):
Gerald & Denise Montpetit

In volume two, the characters include the dad, his two children, and their cousins, Sarah and Jesse. The setting is a camping trip by a lake. As the family with their cousins gathers around the evening campfire, the dad relates stories of what it means to have Jesus in your heart, and how to imitate Jesus even in difficult moments. My only suggestion is that we discuss with our children that as parents we have already invited Jesus into their "hearts" (souls) when they were baptized as infants.

The Wolfling

Book cover: The Wolfling, A Documentary Novel of the Eighteen-Seventies
Author(s):
Sterling North
Illustrator(s):
John Schoenherr

Wolfling is the follow up to Sterling North's Newbery Honor book Rascal. The two are loosely related in that they both take place in the wilderness of Wisconsin. Rascal is largely an autobiography of North's unusual childhood in Wisconsin in the early part of the 20th century while Wolfling takes place in the time that North's father was a boy soon after the Civil War. It is based on the letters that he sent North about his childhood.

100 Prophecies Fulfilled by Jesus

Chart: '100 Prophecies Fulfilled by Jesus'

This fascinating wall chart delineates 100 prophecies of the Old Testament that were fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament. The prophecies are organized according to the following categories: Jesus' Birth, Jesus' Life and Ministry, Jesus' Death and Resurrection, and Jesus' Titles and Attributes. Each prophecy is briefly summarized and includes the pertinent biblical references from the Old and New Testaments.

The Armor of God

Book cover: 'Armor of God'

The Armor of God pictures a soldier in full battle gear - sword, shield, helmet, etc. - with descriptions explaining their figurative meaning according to Ephesians 6:10-18: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Life of Jesus

Book cover: 'Life of Jesus'

We put this poster up in our upstairs hallway thinking that the colorful pictures would be attractive to the little ones and help them develop a better understanding of the Life of Jesus. The full color drawings are attractive but dignified. It's been a big hit so far. I find my six year old reading words here and there, my four year old asking about what happens in different pictures and my two year old pointing to her favorite scenes. The pictures include simple descriptions and dialogue along with Biblical references.
