Many Catholic homeschoolers are making Latin an important part of their curriculum. For Catholics it's partly to help instill a love for the traditions of our faith, and many Catholic homeschoolers attend a Latin Mass on a regular basis. There is another reason for the study of Latin (which is why it is a very common study even among Protestant homeschoolers.) The study of Latin is very helpful for understanding even English grammar because it is so well ordered. Naturally, it will also enhance vocabulary and spelling since many English words find their roots in Latin. I can also tell you from experience that it can be very helpful for taking the SAT test!
One way to "work on your Latin" is to say some of your daily prayers in Latin. I can' t help much with the pronunciations on the website, but you may wish to obtain a copy of Latin Prayers of the Mass and Rosary, which includes an audio tape and is available from Our Father's House which can assist you.
Pater Noster (Our Father)
Pater Noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum: adveniat regnum tuum: fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelo, et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie: et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem. Sed libera nos a malo. Amen.
Ave Maria (Hail Mary)
Ave Maria gratia plena Dominus tecum: Benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy)
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.
Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen)
O clemens; O pia; O dulcis Virgo Maria.
Grace Before Meals (Bless Us O Lord...)
Benedic Domine, nos, et haec tua dona quae de tua largitate sumus sumpturi. Per Christum Domine Nostrum. Amen.
